La Roche-aux-Fées, Brittany

Heading from Nantes to St Malo in the summer of 2002, I came across the Rock of the Faeries, a five thousand year old long barrow near to the village of Essé in Brittany.

The barrow is about 20m long by 5m wide making it one of the largest of its kind in Europe, and it is made of about forty stones.

The stones are purple shale and come from a site approximately 5km south in the Theil-de-Bretagne forest. The heaviest weigh about forty tons.
